Three hundred kilometres of barrier reef. Jungle loud with howler monkeys. Maya temples older than most of Europe’s cathedrals. And a little under half a million people who will talk to you at length about the best places to eat, relax and explore. Belize is a small country with an unreasonable amount going on and Placencia, a sixteen-mile peninsula in the south with the Caribbean on one side and a quiet lagoon on the other, is one of the best places to take it all in.

We book tours for our Gecko guests in Placencia every week of the year, which means we have a fairly clear picture of which Belize experiences people come home talking about and which ones they politely never mention again. This guide is built on that. It is also written for a particular stretch of the calendar; September through November, when the peninsula is at it’s quietest and Belize is at its most pristine self.

🐒 Monkey River Wildlife Tour

If you only have time for a few excursions, put Monkey River on the list.

The day starts with a boat ride along the coast before heading up the Monkey River, where you can spot black howler monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles and plenty of birds. The howler monkeys are definitely the highlight. Hearing them call through the jungle is an experience you won’t forget.

The tour also includes a walk through the forest and a stop in Monkey River Village for lunch. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and a hat, and get ready for a full day outside.

🤿 Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef

You can’t come to Placencia without getting out on the reef.

The Silk Cayes are a favorite for a classic Belize snorkeling day. Expect colorful coral, nurse sharks, stingrays and, if you’re lucky, sea turtles. You’ll also get some serious island-postcard scenery along the way.

Laughing Bird Caye is another great option, especially for families or anyone who isn’t a confident swimmer. The water is shallow and calm, making it an easy introduction to snorkeling in Belize.

If you’re visiting during the spring whale shark season, ask about trips to Gladden Spit as well.

🏛️ Maya Sites & Inland Adventures

Ready for a break from the beach? Head inland.

Xunantunich is one of Belize’s most impressive Maya sites. You can climb El Castillo for incredible views across the Mopan River and into Guatemala.

For something a little more adventurous, try cave tubing and ziplining. You’ll float through a cave system once considered sacred by the Maya before heading into the treetops for a zipline course.

And if you’re looking for something more relaxed, a chocolate-making and waterfall tour combines two of southern Belize’s best experiences; learning about local cacao and ending the day with a swim.

How do you choose a tour operator in Placencia?

Look for an operator who runs their own boats and guides rather than subcontracting, who knows the water well enough to change the plan when conditions change, and who has been on the peninsula long enough to have a reputation worth protecting. Do I need a car in Placencia?
Not usually. Golf carts, taxis and bicycles make getting around easy, and most tour operators will pick you up directly from your accommodation.

How do I get to Placencia?
Most guests fly into Belize City and take a short domestic flight to Placencia. Driving is also an option and takes around four hours.

What currency is used?
Belize uses the Belize dollar, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.

How far ahead should I book tours?
A few days is generally fine during the quieter months, while private charters and larger groups should book further ahead. Your Gecko concierge can also arrange tours before or during your stay.

Is Placencia good for beginner snorkelers?
Absolutely. Laughing Bird Caye is a particularly good choice because the water is generally shallow and sheltered.
